9 - Suppression Leads to Destruction
“I left because of the deep shame that being judged as “good” or “bad” can bring. An example is the blame and immense judgment placed on women for “sexual sin”. The “she had it coming”, “modest is hottest” purity culture—it cannot be understated how harmful it is to women AND men. The idea that men simply cannot control themselves if my skirt is mid-thigh. The shame placed on women. It’s a lot to undo that mindset, it’s embedded in the self worth of little girls as they grow up. That’s just a teeny tiny drop in the ocean of reasons why I turned from Christianity. I find it manipulative, often classist, judgmental, and completely money obsessed. Are there people within Christianity who are loving and kind? Of course! But Christianity as a whole is toxic. Leaving is the best decision I ever made—ever!” -Katharine
